ARK Invest decided to sell Coinbase shares for $5.2 million

A well-known investment company from the cryptocurrency sector is reducing its exposure to the largest US digital currency exchange.

The investment firm founded by Cathie Wood several years ago sold Coinbase shares when they hit an 18-month price high of $119.7 per share. The value of the said sale totaled $5.2 million, and the company is currently continuing to realize profits from its investments as the value of the shares of the mentioned cryptocurrency exchange continues to increase.

ARK Invest sells Coinbase shares

The business move of the above-mentioned investment company comes in the context of a sharp and regular increase in the price of Coinbase shares, which takes place after the controversial revelations of the rival digital currency exchange, i.e. Binance and its former CEO Changpeng Zhao. There should be no shying away from the fact that these confessions concerned money laundering and sanctions violations in the United States.

It is impossible not to notice that Coinbase shares have increased by as much as 168% over the last year, and since January 2023 they have increased by approximately over 220%. Despite this fact, they still remain approximately 70% below the ATH that occurred at the September 2021 stage. ARK Invest has already actively sold Coinbase shares in the recent past, both in July and October 2023.

It should also be noted that ARK Invest is also in the process of selling Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) shares. On November 24, ARK invest disposed of 94,624 GBTC shares, and the value of this transaction was approximately USD 3 million. This means a continuation of the sales trend, which also covers July 2023. During this time, ARK sold GBTC shares worth over $103 million.

Erica Balchunas from Bloomberg, who is a financial analyst of ETF funds, emphasizes that the sale of GBTC by ARK Invest in no way means that the company is giving up on Bitcoin or is preparing to introduce a spot ETF for the oldest cryptocurrency.

Finally, it is worth noting that ARK Invest continues to lead an investment round that focuses on digital currency companies. On November 27 this year, ARK purchased 252,421 shares of popular banking app SoFi, and since the beginning of the year, it has purchased a total of 1.6 million shares of the same company worth $11 million. Moreover, in the first stage of November this year, the company acquired shares in the Robinhood investment application worth an estimated $1.1 million.
